The purpose of the Clinical Virology Network (CVN) is to bring together a wide range of clinical colleagues and physicians to work across geographical and organization boundaries to inform in real time about the epidemic circulation of infectious diseases and pathogens.
The story begins with the RespVir Network, which was founded in 2009 on the initiative of the section "Clinical Virology" of GfV (Gesellschaft für Virologie).
The aim of the RespVir Network was to create a valid online image by recording evidence of respiratory viruses in a database portal and inform in real time the clinical colleagues and physicians about the epidemic circulation of respiratory pathogens.
In September 2014 the Respiratory Network extended the spectrum of respiratory pathogens to bacteria under the guidance of bacteriological experts. Two years later we developed the Gastroenteritis Network, which is a tool similar to Respiratory Network, used for the surveillance of gastroenteritis pathogens. 15 centers have registered themselves and started to make documentation already (as of November 2017).
The Network has proven to be a powerful tool in synergy to previously established surveillance systems of national health authorities in Germany.
